Overview

About the tour

Known for being beautifully scenic, the Machame Route also has the best summit success rate. This route allows you to “climb high, sleep low”, giving your body time to adjust to the changes in altitude over several days. Climbs can take six or seven days; the difference between six and seven days Machame route is that with six days, you won’t camp at Karanga campsite, so you will walk for a longer distance to reach the base camp passing Karanga campsite.

The climb begins at Machame Gate, at an altitude of 1800 metres, with an approach to the southwest of the mountain. It passes through majestic rainforest on the first day, before continuing up the mountain to reach Shira Camp, where the Lemosho route joins from the west. From here you traverse the southern side of the mountain to Barranco via Lava Tower, and climb the Great Barranco Wall on your way to Barafu Camp. After reaching the summit, you will descend by the Mweka trail, rather than retracing your steps along the ascent route.

The Machame route is nicknamed the ‘Whiskey Route’ as it is considered more difficult than the ‘Coca Cola Route’, the nickname for the Marangu route. In reality, it is not more technically difficult but is longer and in places steeper. The longer distance and the opportunity to ‘walk high, sleep low’ offer much better acclimatization and as a result a very high success rate.

Day 01 :
ARRIVAL

All trekkers need to organize their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From JRO we will arrange a private transfer to your hotel. That night or early the next morning you will meet your local ZAFS representative and have a full pre-climb briefing.

1 hour
Breakfast

The first day trekking begins at Machame Gate (1,640 meters). Typically you will drive from the town of Moshi to the gate, which takes approximately an hour. On the way you will get to see subsistence farming and the town of Machame. The first day trek on the Machame Route is a long one (~11km / 7miles) and takes approximately 5-7 hours to complete. We mostly supply packed lunch for this route and 2-3 litres of bottled water. This is the only bottled water you will receive. From here on porters will collect water from mountain streams. The day’s trekking ends at Machame Camp (2,835 meters) which sits near the border of the rainforest zone and the low alpine zone. By the time you arrive your porters will have already setup your camp and tents, and dinner will be served.

6-7 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On day two you will rise early, pack your gear and prepare for the trek from Machame Camp to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters). The trek is relatively steep as you enter the low alpine zone which is characterized by moorlands and grasslands. Shira Camp 2 sits on a plateau which provides you with the first views of Kibo in the North-West and Mount Meru in the East. Day two takes approximately 4-6 hours and covers a distance of 5km / 3miles.

5-6 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day three is a long and tough trek east off the Shira Plateau through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’, up to Lava Tower and the Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters and then back down via the Southern Circuit to Barranco Camp (3,900 meters). After lunch we will descend to Barranco Camp, following the ‘walk high, sleep low’ golden rule of acclimatization. Our descent to Barranco Camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The route is approximately 11km / 7 miles in length and takes 5-7 hours to complete.

6-7 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A short, but fun, day starting with a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite. This is a shorter day meant for acclimatization.

4-5 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position.

3-4 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist, or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

12-14 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Moshi for shower and then later our driver will pick you and be transferred to Moshi at the hotel.

3-4 hours
Breakfast, Lunch

Friendly, personalised & professional service What an experience! Our 7 day Kilimanjaro trek with ZAFS Tours is something we'll never forget. As a locally owned and operated company, ZAFS gave us personalised service and attention every step of the way. Huzeifa made sure we had all the information well before our trip and was available to answer our many questions about what to pack and the various logistics. Any gear we didn't have we were able to hire in Moshi - which saved us buying it. On the mountain, the support crew (including 3 guides, a cook and 19 porters) were exceptional. They ensured we had everything we needed every day - from coffee delivered to our tent in the morning, to nutritious meals, and even filling our hot water bottles at night. They really set us up for success on the summit. We honestly feel so lucky to have chosen ZAFS to organise our trek and to have had the team we did while on the mountain. For anyone considering a Kilimanjaro trek, I have no hesitation in recommending ZAFS.

Brilliant experience with ZAFS. Highly recommend them for your Tanzania Trip! We did a 12 nights day trip that included across 6 nights in North & Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park; 2 nights in transit (Dar Es Salam and Arusha) and 4 nights in Zanzibar. The experience was very comfortable from the first interaction itself - Huzeifa made time over multiple calls to understand our expectations and then help plan the trip; instead of sending us a templatised itinerary and force fitting our plans around it. He never really tried to “sell” us anything, except maybe the fact that Tanzania will blow our mind, and blow it did :) . He never pushed anything and was flexible to even let us manage our own hotel accommodation when we didn’t like any of the options he sent. While we were apprehensive about how the whole safari experience would be, the trip was super comfortable - the accommodations were great, our driver Kefa was fantastic (do ask for him if you’re planning a trip!) and the safari vehicle was absolutely top notch. The ZAFS team was very accommodative of our requests (leaving late or early, but mostly coming back late; food requests, etc.) and took extra care to ensure each aspect of the trip worked like clockwork. We even had Huzeifa himself check-in on us almost every day to ensure everything was going all right, even when we were on our own in Zanzibar. Our pick ups were always on time and all the people we interacted were warm and very friendly. Overall, very impressed with the level of service from the team and will highly recommend planning a safari with them. I’m definitely going back to Tanzania with them, this time with my whole family!

PRIVATE CLIMB MOUNT KILIMANJARO 5DAYS 4NIGHTS I private climbed Mount Kilimanjaro 5days 4nights via Marangu Route, everything was provided by ZAFS TOUR. why did I choose ZAFS? Because ZAFS is a tour operator who already has an Outdoor Shop, the name of the shop is GILMANS OUTDOOR. so for many climbing rental needs I only do 1 door and coordinate with the guide, and of course the price is cheaper but the facilities are very good. The staff were all very communicative and made my trip enjoyable. never be afraid to choose a private climb, I have experienced it and it is a lifetime experience that will not be forgotten. greetings from Indonesia!😊
