Overview

About the tour

Known for being beautifully scenic, the Machame Route also has the best summit success rate. This route allows you to “climb high, sleep low”, giving your body time to adjust to the changes in altitude over several days. Climbs can take six or seven days; the difference between six and seven days Machame route is that with six days, you won’t camp at Karanga campsite, so you will walk for a longer distance to reach the base camp passing Karanga campsite.

The climb begins at Machame Gate, at an altitude of 1800 metres, with an approach to the southwest of the mountain. It passes through majestic rainforest on the first day, before continuing up the mountain to reach Shira Camp, where the Lemosho route joins from the west. From here you traverse the southern side of the mountain to Barranco via Lava Tower, and climb the Great Barranco Wall on your way to Barafu Camp. After reaching the summit, you will descend by the Mweka trail, rather than retracing your steps along the ascent route.

The Machame route is nicknamed the ‘Whiskey Route’ as it is considered more difficult than the ‘Coca Cola Route’, the nickname for the Marangu route. In reality, it is not more technically difficult but is longer and in places steeper. The longer distance and the opportunity to ‘walk high, sleep low’ offer much better acclimatization and as a result a very high success rate.

All trekkers need to organize their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From JRO we will arrange a private transfer to your hotel. That night or early the next morning you will meet your local ZAFS representative and have a full pre-climb briefing.

1 hour
Breakfast

The first day trekking begins at Machame Gate (1,640 meters). Typically you will drive from the town of Moshi to the gate, which takes approximately an hour. On the way you will get to see subsistence farming and the town of Machame. The first day trek on the Machame Route is a long one (~11km / 7miles) and takes approximately 5-7 hours to complete. We mostly supply packed lunch for this route and 2-3 litres of bottled water. This is the only bottled water you will receive. From here on porters will collect water from mountain streams. The day’s trekking ends at Machame Camp (2,835 meters) which sits near the border of the rainforest zone and the low alpine zone. By the time you arrive your porters will have already setup your camp and tents, and dinner will be served.

6-7 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On day two you will rise early, pack your gear and prepare for the trek from Machame Camp to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters). The trek is relatively steep as you enter the low alpine zone which is characterized by moorlands and grasslands. Shira Camp 2 sits on a plateau which provides you with the first views of Kibo in the North-West and Mount Meru in the East. Day two takes approximately 4-6 hours and covers a distance of 5km / 3miles.

5-6 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day three is a long and tough trek east off the Shira Plateau through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’, up to Lava Tower and the Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters and then back down via the Southern Circuit to Barranco Camp (3,900 meters). After lunch we will descend to Barranco Camp, following the ‘walk high, sleep low’ golden rule of acclimatization. Our descent to Barranco Camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The route is approximately 11km / 7 miles in length and takes 5-7 hours to complete.

6-7 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A short, but fun, day starting with a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse over scree to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite. This is a shorter day meant for acclimatization.

4-5 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position.

3-4 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist, or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

12-14 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in Moshi for shower and then later our driver will pick you and be transferred to Moshi at the hotel.

3-4 hours
Breakfast, Lunch

After a much-needed night’s rest, we will bid you goodbye. If you have arranged airport transfers withus or a safari / Zanzibar trip, we will collect you in the morning for your onward journey.

Glad we chose ZAFS ZAFS Tours exceeded all expectations during our Mt. Kilimanjaro expedition, thanks to their outstanding team of guides—Amani, Faruq, Mussa, and Majumba. The service was truly exceptional from start to finish. The guides demonstrated unparalleled care throughout the journey. Their attention to our well-being, health, and safety was remarkable. They went above and beyond, ensuring we were acclimatizing properly, providing timely reminders for hydration, and keeping a close eye on our overall comfort. A special mention goes to Amani, Faruq, Mussa, and Majumba for their genuine concern and support during challenging moments. The food provided on the mountain was both nourishing and delicious, surpassing typical trekking expectations. The guides ensured dietary preferences and restrictions were considered, making the dining experience on Kilimanjaro an unexpected highlight. It felt like a home-cooked meal at high altitudes. One notable instance of their exceptional service was when, on summit night, we realized we had forgotten our windbreakers. The guides swiftly arranged replacements on the spot, displaying not only their preparedness but also their dedication to ensuring our comfort and safety during the most crucial part of the trek. The camaraderie and fun shared with the guides made the journey memorable. They brought a lively spirit to the expedition, creating an atmosphere that turned strangers into a close-knit group. Their professionalism was evident in every aspect of the trek, fostering an environment that balanced adventure with safety. Huzeifa, the owner of ZAFS Tours, played a pivotal role in orchestrating this seamless experience. His attention to detail, commitment to customer satisfaction, and hands-on approach to managing the operation were evident throughout. Accommodations both before and after the trek were comfortable and well-organized, adding a touch of luxury to bookend the rugged adventure. By the end of the expedition, the group, including the guides and Huzeifa, felt like one big family. The bonds formed during the trek were a testament to the warmth and hospitality of ZAFS Tours. The combination of professionalism, personalized care, and a genuine passion for their work made this Mt. Kilimanjaro experience truly exceptional. ZAFS Tours has set the bar high for adventure tourism, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking an unforgettable trekking experience.

MAGNIFICENT KILLIMANJARO with ZAFS We had an incredible 7 day Lemosho trip for a group of 6 of us. Zafs took care of everything & supported us in every way before, after & in the trip. There were moments when things were hard-they had prepared us for these times. They were aware of our limitations and our needs & were next to us when we needed them. I couldn’t have got to the top without our guides John, Gabriel & Janeth. And the porters & chef-what can I say-they carry all that gear on their backs & always smiling. They are real heros. The food they carry & prepare was excellent. The toilet tent was never a ‘no go’ zone! They chatted with us & taught me so much about Tanzania that I didn’t know previously. I wish I could have stayed longer to explore more of this beautiful country. I will definitely come back to see more. I would highly recommend Zafs. 🙏🏽 Asante

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Fitness Level

Machame Route is a moderately difficult trekking route, so any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. If you can walk a 10-14 km/6-7 miles per day, this climb should be do-able for you. From our experience, those with a good fitness level who get proper acclimatisation always reach the summit. If you have concerns regarding your fitness level then you can choose to opt for the longer day routes with less daily trekking distance. Essentially, you should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will to, you can.

This Route is Recommended For:

The Machame Route is recommended for those who want a shorter route due to its acclimatisation profile.

Walking Duration for Each Day

In the Machame Route, on average you will be walking for 6-9 hours a day.

Transfers

1. AIRPORT TRANSFER – When you arrive at Kilimanjaro, one of our drivers will pick you up in a spacious and comfortable Toyota Alphard and take you to your hotel. They’ll be waiting outside the arrivals exit at the airport holding a ZAFS signboard with your name / group name so they’ll be easy to locate.

2. TRANSFER TO TREK GATE – We will use Toyota Hiace or Coaster, which are better suited for navigating the wilderness terrain en route to Mt. Kilimanjaro. These cars are built to handle rough trails and ensure your safety.

3. TRANSFER BACK TO AIRPORT – We will provide you with a return transfer to the airport in a Toyota Alphard. You’ll be notified with your pick-up time so that you are dropped in time for your flight back.

When to Arrive

The closest airport to land for your Kilimanjaro experience will be Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is a 45 mins drive from Moshi town where you will be staying overnight before and after your trek.
You can even take a flight to Dar es Salaam and then a connecting domestic flight to JRO.

Arrive at least a day in advance for your pre-trek briefing, gear checks, meeting the team/guides and a visit to Gilmans Rental Store for any items you may need to rent for the trek.

However, it is our ZAFS recommendation that you arrive a couple days in advance or have a full day before your trek starts so you can do a day trip to Materuni Waterfalls along with its coffee tour for an acclimatisation day.

Hotel Accommodation Stay in Moshi

With our packages, you will be offered a hotel accommodation stay in Moshi town a night before and a night after your Kilimanjaro trek (two nights in total). We will accommodate you in our trusted choice of properties that we use in Moshi and we will ensure you have a comfortable stay will the necessary amenities.

By default, this will be a double occupancy room unless you request a single supplement at an extra cost.

It will be on a bed and breakfast basis but you can upgrade to half-board or full-board at an additional cost. However, we do recommend you try the local food around Moshi in various other restaurants and cafes too. Contact your ZAFS travel consultant for recommendations on this.

Storage Room

If you have items you’d like to leave behind in Moshi and don’t wish to take them with you on the trek then you can do so at the property you’ll be staying at in town. They will store it for you in a lockable safe room until you’re back down from the mountain.
