Tour Overview

About the tour

The Rongai route is one of the least frequented of the official Kilimanjaro routes. The upside of this is that there will be few other climbers about and for most of the trek you are walking through virgin wilderness and awe-inspiring scenery. While it is flatter, it does not give the climb high sleep low option and therefore recommended to select more days for acclimatization.

Starting from the Rongai gate, the route traverses several diverse climate zones, and each produces its own amazing views and experiences. Because of its remote location, the route offers trekkers a relatively unspoiled wilderness experience where it is possible to see large wildlife like antelope, elephants, and buffalo. Heading up to Kikelewa Caves on day two, the views start to open up, with the Amboseli Plains of Kenya stretching into the distance. The route continues up to the mountain’s second summit at Mawenzi, before crossing the Saddle, a barren plain that connects the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. After reaching the summit, the descent is along the more heavily travelled Marangu route, offering you the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro from both sides

Lying in the rain shadow of Kilimanjaro, the Rongai route is one of the best routes to make the attempt on Kilimanjaro during the rainy season, as it sees substantially less rain than the southern routes.

Day 01 :
ARRIVAL

All trekkers need to organize their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From JRO we will arrange a private transfer to your hotel. That night or early the next morning you will meet your local ZAFS representative and have a full pre-climb briefing.

1 hour
Hotel

Transfer from your hotel to Marangu Gate for registration and then a further transfer to the Rongai trailhead (approx. 2½ hours). Our porters prepare and pack our supplies and luggage before we start our ascent through the village of Nale Moru. The small winding path crosses maize fields before climbing gently through a pine forest until we reach First Cave Camp at 2,600m altitude.

4-5 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The trail continues up towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m) en route, and reaching Kikelewa Caves at 3600m. From here the views start to open up and you will see for yourself how huge a mountain Kilimanjaro really is. The small shrubs of the moorland became thinner as you approve the Second Cave. Temperatures begin to drop.

5-6 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all-around views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (4330 m), spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.

4-5 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We will spend a full day at and around Mawenzi Tarn as part of the acclimatization process. There will be plenty to do, with several paths leading up the ridges and towers of Mawenzi, and our crew will help arrange short excursions to explore the area.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Campsite (4750m) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent tomorrow.

5-6 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You will be woken around 23:30 and after some tea and biscuits we will start our ascent. This is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m). We then zigzag up to Gilman’s Point (5681m) on the crater rim. This section is very steep with much stone scree and is the most demanding section of the route. From Gilman’s Point we could encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long we can spend taking photographs before we descend back to Kibo Campsite and then Horombo Hut where we will stay overnight. Later in the evening we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

13-14 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast we continue our descent, passing Mandara Hut, down to the Marangu Gate. Transfer to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration.

6-7 hours
Breakfast, Lunch

Prodigious Team | Breathtaking Views I had planned to trek Kilimanjaro one month before my trip. Nothing to do with organisers but spot decision from my side, I would say, I was never disappointed or regret the last minute mind make up I did. It was a fantastically organised trek,, they had lot more flexibility and the hosts were amazing.. food throughout the trek was at its best. Kudos to the team.

Amazing ! Startling ! Overwhelming Support Team ! The summit to Kilimanjaro was no way possible for me unless until I was guided by John and team . Special kudos to these guys - the way they organized, the detailed briefing sessions, the incredible support staff, delicious food, the helpful porters. If it were not for Mariki - a member of John's team I believe I wouldn't have been able to summit the Uhuru peak. I would recommend ZAFS/John to anyone who is planning to summit Kilimanjaro. They really do ensure that you reach the heights. Not to forget that John & team made us enjoy the journey throughout !

Atop Kilimanjaro Uhuru peak We went for Kilimanjaro Summit in August 2023. 17 of us travelled to Kilimanjaro through India Hikes who are partners with ZAFS to organise end to end support for this exciting climb to the summit. The ZAFS team is such a wonderful bunch of people that they made this entire climb look so easy. The team is very knowledgeable about the entire terrain and guided us on how to go Pole-Pole, one step at a time so as not to get tired during the steep climb and long trekking route. The stay arrangements in tents, the lunch arrangements and the food throughout had been great. The entire team is so jovial, fun loving and helpful. They were always helping the team at every step and even carried the backpacks of few team members who were too tired on long days. Thank you John and thank you entire ZAFS team in making this trip so fun, safe and memorable for all of us. I would definitely recommend your team to many of my friends from India who wish to scale the Kilimanjaro peak.

Loved Our Guides! "Moo" and Juma, our driver and guide, respectively, were just great. So enthusiastic, informative, always on time and well-pressed! Our time in Zanzibar was only pleasant because of these two. Moo was an exceptionally good driver, courteous and safe, in very challenging conditions. Juma was caring and helped us arrange last-minute tour options. This is a first-rate tour agency!

Exhilarating experience climbing Mt Kili with ZAFS We engaged ZAFS about 6 months in advance while scouting for travel agencies. As we were really new to the region and never visited Tanzania, it was a bit of task to select the right tour company as you will find heaps of options with a range of offers and prices. ZAFS came not only recommended from friends and family but were thoroughly professional, patient and accomodating during our enquiries and throughout the trip. We took the 7 day Lemosho route to climb Mt Kili. The team provided by ZAFS were well trained, with excellent hospitality, surpassing our every expectation from meals, to setting up tents before we arrive at the next camp site, cruising through the difficult terrains making it look easy. From 3 course meal options to clean drinking water and clean toilets, being environmentally sustainable by providing us personal thrash bags to collect thrash on our way, some fantastic entertainment on our way with singing and dancing (optional but highly uplifting especially after a days climb). ZAFS trek leaders were exceptionally patient, understood every hikers strengths and weaknesses and ensured we met our end goal. They at times went out of their way to carry our day packs just to get through some rough terrain. They also help in recommending and reviewing your gear to make your climb seamless. Highly recommend ZAFS to help meet your bucket list in Tanzania.

Lemosho + safari ❤️ We booked a 2 week itinerary with ZAFS consisting of the 7 day Lemosho route and a 3 day safari. Huezeifa was our point of contact months before our trip and was patient to answer all of our questions. His advice was extremely valuable to pack all the essentials for our trip. The trip itself was fantastically organized, we had all the information in the right time and the ZAFS team was also available to us for any questions during the trip. The guides and the rest of the crew that ZAFS works with really knew their stuff, they were professional and a lot of fun to climb the mountain with. Their help and expertise was instrumental at getting us to the top of Africa 🙂.

My incredible experience with ZAFS TOURS One of the best professional tour operators. Highly recommended! Their service to their hospitality was absolutely top-notch. The Food was just superb despite the conditions on the mountain. As per our request they also arranged a surprise birthday party. Their guides and porters were very helpful, friendly and caring. Their moral support helped me alot during the entire trip especially during the summit. Their tents are very warm, clean, well maintained and comfortable. I really enjoyed this adventurous trip with them as they made it an incredible experience! Would definitely recommend ZAFS TOURS for anyone looking to conquer Roof of Africa (Mt Kilimanjaro)! Looking forward with more trips with them!

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Fitness Level

Any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. If you can walk a 10-14 km/6-7 miles per day, this climb should be do-able for you. From our experience, those with a good fitness level who get proper acclimatisation always reach the summit. If you have concerns regarding your fitness level then you can choose to opt for the longer day routes with less daily trekking distance. Essentially, you should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will to, you can.

This Route is Recommended For:

The Rongai Route is recommended for those looking to climb in the rainy season as this is the only route that approaches the summit from the north of the mountain.

We recommend choosing this route if you want to avoid the crowds. It’s also a good option if you have less or no trekking experience and want a more relaxed climb with fewer steep sections.

Choices Between 6 Days or 7 Days for Rongai Route

We highly recommend going for the seven day option as it gives you an extra day for acclimatisation.

The topography of this trail doesn’t afford many opportunities to ‘climb high, sleep low’ and so the seven day option will give you an extra day to acclimatise at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.

Transfers

1. AIRPORT TRANSFER – When you arrive at Kilimanjaro, one of our drivers will pick you up in a spacious and comfortable Toyota Alphard and take you to your hotel. They’ll be waiting outside the arrivals exit at the airport holding a ZAFS signboard with your name / group name so they’ll be easy to locate.

2. TRANSFER TO TREK GATE – We will use Toyota Hiace or Coaster, which are better suited for navigating the wilderness terrain en route to Mt. Kilimanjaro. These cars are built to handle rough trails and ensure your safety.

3. TRANSFER BACK TO AIRPORT – We will provide you with a return transfer to the airport in a Toyota Alphard. You’ll be notified with your pick-up time so that you are dropped in time for your flight back.

When to Arrive

The closest airport to land for your Kilimanjaro experience will be Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is a 45 mins drive from Moshi town where you will be staying overnight before and after your trek.
You can even take a flight to Dar es Salaam and then a connecting domestic flight to JRO.

Arrive at least a day in advance for your pre-trek briefing, gear checks, meeting the team/guides and a visit to Gilmans Rental Store for any items you may need to rent for the trek.

However, it is our ZAFS recommendation that you arrive a couple days in advance or have a full day before your trek starts so you can do a day trip to Materuni Waterfalls along with its coffee tour for an acclimatisation day.

Hotel Accommodation Stay in Moshi

With our packages, you will be offered a hotel accommodation stay in Moshi town a night before and a night after your Kilimanjaro trek (two nights in total). We will accommodate you in our trusted choice of properties that we use in Moshi and we will ensure you have a comfortable stay will the necessary amenities.

By default, this will be a double occupancy room unless you request a single supplement at an extra cost.

It will be on a bed and breakfast basis but you can upgrade to half-board or full-board at an additional cost. However, we do recommend you try the local food around Moshi in various other restaurants and cafes too. Contact your ZAFS travel consultant for recommendations on this.

Storage Room

If you have items you’d like to leave behind in Moshi and don’t wish to take them with you on the trek then you can do so at the property you’ll be staying at in town. They will store it for you in a lockable safe room until you’re back down from the mountain.
