Marangu Route

This is the original Kilimanjaro route (also known as Coca-Cola route) and the only one to offer accommodation in communal A-frame huts instead of camping. It’s quite a popular route as it isn’t seen to be very tough but as there isn’t much time to acclimatise it has a low success rate.

Machame Route

The Machame route is one of the most beautiful and definitely a fan favorite - popular route. It is normally done in 6 or 7 days and the latter offers good acclimatisation. With this said, it is also the busiest of the seven routes.

Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route can be argued to be one of the most scenic routes with its scenery changing from day to day. It is also one of the newest routes and offers great acclimatisation. It may just be our favourite route! It can be completed in seven or eight days but the latter has one of the best summit success rates of all the trails.

Rongai Route

The Rongai route is the only route that ascends the northern slope of Kilimanajro making it a good choice for those looking to climb during the rainy season. It is also one of the quieter routes but offers amazing views at the same time. As there isn’t an opportunity to climb high and sleep low for the six day option, you can pick the seven day one for an extra day of acclimatisation at Mawenzi Tarn Camp which we ‘d highly recommend.

Shira Route

The Shira route starts higher than any of the other routes and this can make it a tough one from an acclimatisation point of view. It is one of the older routes but very similar to the Lemosho route and so offers the same perks of views as Lemosho.

Umbwe Route

If a challenge is what you’re after then the Umbwe route is the shortest, steepest and the hardest Kilimanjaro route. It is mostly untaken by experienced trekkers that are confident in their ability to acclimate quickly to high altitude otherwise it has a poor acclimatization profile.

Northern Route

A favourite for some - the Northern Route route offers great views, excellent acclimatisation and is a fairly quiet trek with fewer crowds. It is however the longest of routes but also the newest of the seven routes. The 9 day itinerary lets you explore more of the mountain and we recommend this if you have the extra time and budget available.

The best route?

Our particular favourites would have to be Lemosho, Machame and Northern Route as these offer stunning views as they descend through a different path than it’s ascend and also have high summit success rates!
